Latest update: Apply for your .africa domain name during General Availability with these Domain Registrars (Open to anyone)

According to the ICANN New gTLD Program Initial Evaluation Report: "Based on the review of your application (it) has passed Initial Evaluation. The application is eligible to proceed to the next step in the Program."

"The news is especially exciting coming as it did on the eve of the 47th ICANN meeting that is now currently taking place in Durban with virtually the entire world Internet community represented," said Octavia Kumalo, spokesperson for the ZACR.

Taking place at the Durban International Convention Centre, the .ZA Domain Name Authority (ZADNA), in partnership with the ZACR, is playing host to this premier event on the global Internet calendar from 13 to 18 July 2013. Over 1800 delegates are attending.

ICANN holds three international meetings a year across different continents and chose Durban to be the host city for its second conference this year.

"ICANN 47 is the ideal platform to celebrate this latest milestone on the road towards Africa having its own dedicated home on the web. The dotAfrica domain name extension will be good for business and tourism in Africa as it will assist in marketing efforts for the continent," said Ms Kumalo.

Establishing dotAfrica as a top-level domain name is the brainchild of a community of African Internet pioneers, and most recently the African Union Commission. Its intention is to establish a single domain name that can be used to promote the people, businesses and cultures of Africa on the Internet.

After extensive cross-continental consultation, ZACR was chosen as the official operator of the dotAfrica registry. Formerly UniForum SA, and well-known for administering the .co.za domain name environment, ZACR is a non-profit organisation that runs the South African domain register.
